Askan Erämajat, surrounded by scenic woodland, hills and lakes, offers accommodation in the geographic centre of Finland, 150 km to the east of Oulu.
Accommodation is available in 2 log houses on the shore of Lake Valkeaisenjärvi. Heating is by wood fires and eco-friendly electricity. Three apartments (37 - 45 m2) sleep 4-6 people each, with conveniences (individual kitchens). There are also two single rooms. In the school hall, floor space is available for approx. 15 (shared showers and toilets, no cooking facilities). In the summer, there is space for 5 tents and 4 campervans/caravans, and a café in the yard. Lakeside sauna or smoke sauna at 20 m.
Breakfast and evening meal for pre-booked guests include a variety of produce from local forests and lakes (fruit, mushrooms, fish, elk and reindeer meat) and our own garden
produce.
CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS AND WHAT TO DO: The historical Askanmäki at a distance of 3 km has a farm museum and an outdoor summer theatre. Finland's highest waterfall, Hepoköngäs (24 m) lies 25 km to the east (with a special 1 km ramp for the disabled). Hiking trails nearby. Distance to Siikavaara 10 km.
The area is surrounded by fine forests, great for mushroom and wild berry
picking, and jogging. Visitors can go lake fishing, and
rowing boats and canoes are available for hire.

Riding stables at 7 km. A 3 km lighted winter ski-track starts from outside the
house. Also snowshoe trekking, skating and ice-hole swimming. Summer activities include Nordic
walking, petanque and football (sports equipment available from 2009). Co-operation with the Adult Education Centre will start in 2008

DIRECTIONS: Public transport: train stations in Kajaani at 130 km, and Oulu at 150 km. Buses from Oulu and Kajaani; the stop to ask for is Aska School. Motorists/cyclists: The distance from Pudasjärvi to Askan Erämajat is 60 km. Take Road 20 to the east, then turn south onto Road 78. Erämajat is beside the road. From Puolanka, go north on Road 78 for 24 km.

PRICES: Accommodation, summer: 25 eur + VAT 8% /person/day ,incl. sauna. Children under 5 years free. Winter: 30 eur + VAT 8%/person/day. Advance booking obligatory in winter time! Breakfast: organic, 8 eur + 22%/person, children under 5 years free, 5 - 10-years half price. Camping €20/day/tent/person. Campervan/caravan €30/day. Parking of cars €10/day. Breakfast €8.
